Camp Tekakwitha
Springville, Alabama
The Renewal of Camp Tekakwitha
CampTekakwitha.net
With a small lake and just over 120 acres of beautiful Alabama wilderness,
Camp Tekawitha represents both a gift from the past and a living opportunity for today and the future.
The Diocese of Birmingham has owned the St. Clair County property for over sixty years. For much of its history the Camp was operated as a traditional summer camp for Catholic boys and girls. In the early 1990s the Camp was closed.
In February of 2010 Bishop Robert Baker announced the renewal of Camp Tekawitha. The camp has begun its new life as a gathering place for our Native American Catholics and as a venue for Scout wilderness camping.
Other wilderness style events have occurred but on a limited basis because of the lack of facilities.
There are no plans to return to a church summer camp for boys and girls.
A much broader life for the property is envisioned:
- A place for Native American Catholics to gather for meeting, prayer and simply to embrace
this wonderful gift from our Creator
- Continued life as a place for Scout camping and activities. Camping is available
to any Catholic chartered Boy Scout troop.
We are grateful to all those who have helped us bring this camp back to life through their volunteer efforts.
